Golden Birds (formerly known as Carrier), from Berkeley, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, plays urgent post-rock that combines furious
guitar work, impassioned lyricism, and infectious bass and drum interplay. Drawing equally from the raw
energy of punk, the rhythmic tension of hip-hop, the rich textures of electronica, and the intricate
patterning of minimalism, the trio craft a sound that is uniquely frenetic - and instantly addictive. Their live
performance is a cathartic and sweat-soaked affair.
Golden Birds formed in the spring of 2003 when Webster McBride (guitar, vocals) and Karl Tupper (bass) found
themselves living in the same city again after two years on opposite coasts. Teaming up with Chris
Perdue of The Kuffs on drums, the pair spent their first year honing a set in the clubs and DIY venues of
the SF bay area and up and down the I-5 with Portland?s The Scientifics. When Chris then left the band to
focus on his own project in May of 2004, Webster and Karl enlisted longtime friend (and mastermind of
LA?s The One AM Radio) Hrishikesh Hirway (drums, laptop, vocals) and shifted into a higher gear.
In early June the trio recorded a 6-song debut CDEP for the Electric Human Project. Released on June
30th, "Heart & Arms" arrived just in time for Golden Birds's first month-long US tour, which spanned the country
from Portland to Boston and from Chicago to Little Rock and included shows with Amanda Woodward
(France), Hot Cross (NY), Ampere (MA), and The Deadly (PA).
Since returning to the west coast in August, Golden Birds has played with Malady (VA) and Mount Eerie (WA),
and has seen "Heart & Arms" released on vinyl by the Goleta, CA label Lots of Love. The band is
currently busy recording four new tracks for the European release of "Heart & Arms", to be put out by
Paranoid Records (Caen, France) in January, and laying the groundwork for a second US tour in March
and a first tour of Europe in April. |
