Scott lives in San Francisco, and makes his living as a studio
engineer. He's recorded John Vanderslice, the Mountain Goats, Court &
Spark, William Lazarus, and Tarentel, among many others. In addition to
engineering at Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone Studios, he runs his own
recording space (formerly known as 15th street studios). One River is
Solter's second solo album, following The Brief Light released on
Manifold Records.
As the title suggests, One River's sound - created mostly from
processed guitars, as well as found objects and voices - takes its
inspiration from the movement of water. Each track contains several
layers of musical currents, painting a shimmering surface above
slow-moving drones of "undertow." The album's seven parts combine to
form a continuous, flowing piece, with titles that suggest a journey
both through physical space, and through memory.
In addition to his musical sensibility, Solter's recording
skills are readily apparent here - One River's beautiful, deeply
captured sounds fully envelop the listener. This is an excellent
piece of ambient landscape music, one as fully engaging as it is
useful simply to create a space for thought, or creative output, or
sleep.
